At their seldom best, a zoo can bring moments of profound wonder to a child able to see beasts of wilderness up close. But when they realize the tragedy of animals’ imprisonment, brought to heel by the same forces of civilization that destroy its natural habitat, it brings to light a lamentation that far eclipses any wonder to be found in seeing a polar bear at short distance. Wild animals in the shackles of domestication are no longer wild, conscribed to perish even before they expire. Fireflies left in the jar don’t hear the end of lullabies. Inspired by “The Girl Who Tamed the Arctic”, by Sarah McRae Morton, and “Mareta no’m faces plorar” (Mama don’t make me cry), a Catalan folk song.
lyrics
I see you there, you lonesome bear,
your eyes so sad and full of rage.
Do you remember endless Decembers
before the summer built your cage?
Mama no, don’t make me cry
Skip the page where the magic dies
for fireflies left in the jar
don’t hear the end of lullabies.
